The Linux community is celebrating the 33rd anniversary of its inception, marking another milestone for the open source operating system. Originally released by Linus Torvalds on August 25, 1991, Linux has grown from a small project into one of the most-used operating systems in modern computing. It powers everything from servers and supercomputers to smartphones and embedded systems, highlighting its versatility and importance in the tech industry. As Linux turns 33, the community reflects on its past achievements and looks forward to continued innovation and collaboration in the future.

Below is the original message from Linus Torvalds announcing Linux:

Hello everybody out there using minix –
I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I’d like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).
I’ve currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I’ll get something practical within a few months, and I’d like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won’t promise I’ll implement them
Linus
PS. Yes – it’s free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that’s all I have :-(.

Linux certainly isn’t just for hobbyists anymore.

The post Linux Turns 33! first appeared on BIOSLEVEL.

Steam has introduced a new tab designed to help users discover free games more easily. The tab highlights a variety of free-to-play games, making it more convenient for users to browse and access titles that don’t require a purchase. This update is part of Steam’s ongoing efforts to enhance the user experience by streamlining access to different types of games available on the platform. The new tab’s interface is user-friendly, allowing gamers to quickly filter and find games that fit their preferences. This move is likely to attract more users to Steam, especially those looking for high-quality games without any upfront cost. By improving visibility for free games, Steam is positioning itself as a go-to destination for budget-conscious gamers.

Many of these free games run great on Linux, and are particularly enjoyable on the Linux-powered Steam Deck!

Ubuntu’s Canonical Kernel Team (CKT) is updating its kernel version selection policy. The new approach aims to provide users with the latest upstream Linux kernel at the Ubuntu release freeze date, even if the kernel is still in Release Candidate (RC) status.

This change is intended to offer the latest features and hardware support, though it may also introduce challenges with stability and dependent components. There will be less testing done with the kernel than there has been traditionally, but users will benefit from broader hardware support and other features offered by newer kernels.

The policy will apply to all future Ubuntu releases, with special guidelines for handling “Late” releases. Ubuntu’s 24.10 release, Oracle Oriole, will be the first release to benefit from this change. It is expected to ship with Linux Kernel 6.11.

Prompting users to save unsaved changes before shutting down or restarting in the Plasma Wayland session

"Bounce Keys" now fully work in the Plasma Wayland session, with only one Wayland Showstopper remaining

I'm hopeful this will the smoothest migration for major versions of the KDE Framework, and particularly looking towards a positive Wayland experience. While I've a KDE user since the 2.x days, I remember the early days of 4.x and 5.x being plagued by issues (resulting in projects such as the Trinity Desktop Environment, a KDE 3.x fork).

T-FORCE, the gaming sub-brand of TEAMGROUP, has added a new member to its SIREN series of all-in-one (AIO) liquid coolers: the T-FORCE SIREN DUO360 ARGB CPU & SSD AIO Liquid Cooler, the world's first AIO liquid cooling solution that cools both the CPU and SSD at the same time. The SIREN DUO360 ARGB CPU & SSD AIO Liquid Cooler features an original dual CPU and SSD ARGB water block design, a large 360mm radiator, and three 120mm ARGB hydraulic bearing fans. The new design fully meets the higher cooling requirements of Intel and AMD's next-gen CPUs and PCIe Gen5 SSDs, allowing gamers around the world to enjoy unparalleled fast performance.

The SIREN DUO360 ARGB CPU & SSD AIO Liquid Cooler's ingenious liquid channel design provides highly-efficient cooling, reducing the over 100℃ operating temperatures of powerful 12,000MB/s PCIe Gen5 SSDs by more than 50%. This prevents throttling and allows stable high-speed read and write performance for next-generation devices. The DUO360 ARGB CPU & SSD AIO Liquid Cooler also adopts the translucent ARGB body of the SIREN series and features a new separable magnetic lighting module, which can not only be tightly attached to the top of the SSD water block but also any internal metal location of the chassis. It’s certified to be compatible with the lighting software of motherboard manufacturers ASRock, ASUS, Biostar, GIGABYTE, and MSI[1], giving gamers with various motherboards the freedom to customize their ARGB setup while they enjoy the top performance of a high-end liquid cooler.

To take advantage of Intel and AMD CPUs’ ever-increasing performance and PCIe Gen5 SSDs' high read and write speeds, the T-FORCE SIREN DUO360 ARGB CPU & SSD AIO Liquid Cooler is built to support up to the latest Intel LGA 1700 and AMD AM5 CPU sockets and the popular M.2 SSD 2280 form factor. Gamers can enjoy the unprecedented dual cooling performance with its easy installation process. The T-FORCE SIREN DUO360 ARGB CPU & SSD AIO Liquid Cooler will first be available in North American Amazon stores this November. If you want to obtain the world's first CPU & SSD dual cooling device and sales information, please stay tuned to the latest news on TEAMGROUP's official website and social media channels.

Vienna, October 6th 2022 – Noctua today announced its new NA-TPG1 thermal paste guard for AMD’s latest AM5 based Ryzen processors. When the mounting pressure of the cooling solution is applied, excess thermal paste will be squeezed outwards. With AM5 CPUs, this excess paste tends to accumulate in the cut-outs at the sides of the heat-spreader and may become difficult to remove. Simple and risk-free to apply, the NA-TPG1 prevents this undesired phenomenon.

“While there’s no denying that AMD’s new Ryzen 7000 processors perform fantastic, we found that the cut-outs at the side of the heat-spreader tend to attract thermal paste that can be challenging to clean off” says Roland Mossig (Noctua CEO). “This is where our new thermal paste guard steps in: it’s a simple yet highly effective tool for keeping your new Ryzen 7000 series CPU nice and clean.”

Made from highly heat-resistant polycarbonate and forming a tight seal around the edges of the CPU’s heat-spreader , the NA-TPG1 is simple and risk free to apply and remove. Despite its simplicity, it is highly efficient at preventing thermal paste from accumulating in the cut-outs at the sides of AM5 CPUs.

The NA-TPG1 will be available in a separate set with ten NA-CW1 cleaning wipes (NA-STPG1) as well as with new AM5 editions of Noctua’s award-winning NT-H1 and NT-H2 thermal pastes. All three products are scheduled to become available in December.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price will be EUR/USD 7.90 for the NA-STPG1, EUR/USD 9.90 for the NT-H1 3.5g AM5 Edition and EUR/USD 13.90 for the NT-H2 3.5g AM5 Edition.

It's been a long two month waiting period, but Linux Kernel 6.0 has finally arrived. While not a huge release in terms of features and bugfixes, the Linux Kernel 6.x is anticipated to bring many news features to the kernel and continue to modernize Linux as a platform. In his release announcement, Linus assured us that 6.0 was meant to establish a stable base before the "big changes" come.

As is hopefully clear to everybody, the major version number change is more about me running out of fingers and toes than it is about any big fundamental changes. But of course there’s a lot of various changes in 6.0 – we’ve got over 15k non-merge commits in there in total, after all, and as such 6.0 is one of the bigger releases at least in numbers of commits in a while…

While Rust may not be seen until 6.1 or later, the 6.0 kernel does bring a number of updates that will improve performance for many users. AArch64 (64-bit ARM) hardware support has finally landed, and improvements have been made to both the XFS and EXT4 filesystems: XFS will utilize async buffered writes when io_uring is being used, and EXT4 will now be able to fetch and set UUIDs at the superblock level. Virtualizion on Linux has also been improved, as a "guest vCPU stall detector" psuedo-device has been added to the kernel that can act as a monitor to tell if a host VM has stalled.

Having used Linux since the early 2.x days, I'm very excited to see where the 6.x series will take Linux over the next several years.

Torvalds' official announcement can be read in full on the Linux Kernel Mailing List archive.

The post Linux Kernel 6.0 Officially Released first appeared on BIOSLEVEL.
